TUSCALOOSA ALABAMA STORM SHELTERS

Severe Weather in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Hook Echo from Tuscaloosa, Alabama Tornado

Tuscaloosa, Alabama is located about 40 miles southwest of Birmingham, Alabama, and is best known as the home of The University of Alabama…and the target of several deadly tornadoes. Tuscaloosa has seen a rapid increase in population, currently at around 110,000 residents, plus an additional 40,000 students from September through May. As the fifth most populous city in the state, it is rated as high risk for damage and fatalities from developing tornadoes due to its dense population. Tulcaloosa’s tornado season lasts from March until June with over 80% of its tornados occurring during these months. Tuscaloosa also has a second spike of tornadic activity in November due to the changing seasons and the reoccurrence of spring-like weather.

Just as Moore, Oklahoma has come to be known as the epicenter of Tornado Alley due to the remarkably high number of tornado occurrences there, so has Tuscaloosa similarly earned that moniker in Dixie Alley, the eastern version of Tornado Alley in the lower plains.

Tornado Alley Armor Safe Rooms has served Tuscaloosa and all of Alabama since 2011,  providing premier EF-5 certified and verified FEMA compliant above-ground safe rooms to families across Alabama. In January 2022, the Alabama State Legislature approved an Alabama tax credit for those who meet the guidelines set for obtaining a storm shelter or safe room, and we have already provided many citizens with safe rooms that meet the criteria specified by the legislature.

In addition to protecting your family at home, our bolt-together modular safe room design provides the perfect severe weather solution not only for full-time residents of Tuscaloosa but also for off-campus students. If the student rents a home or other accommodation with an adequate concrete slab foundation suited for anchoring, they can have a safe room too while they’re away at school. Your students will have tornado protection, and you will have peace of mind knowing you have provided them with a severe weather defense while they are earning their degrees. The safe room can be moved from rental to rental, and your graduate will have a safe room to install at their new residence when they graduate.

Tuscaloosa has had its share of extremely dangerous tornadoes, particularly and most recently two devastating ones that occurred in 2000 and again in 2011. If you’re curious about Alabama tornado facts, you can follow the link here.
