Tuscaloosa, Alabama is located about 40 miles southwest of Birmingham, Alabama, and is best known as the home of The University of Alabama…and the target of several deadly tornadoes. Tuscaloosa has seen a rapid increase in population, currently at around 110,000 residents, plus an additional 40,000 students from September through May. As the fifth most populous city in the state, it is rated as high risk for damage and fatalities from developing tornadoes due to its dense population. Tulcaloosa’s tornado season lasts from March until June with over 80% of its tornados occurring during these months. Tuscaloosa also has a second spike of tornadic activity in November due to the changing seasons and the reoccurrence of spring-like weather.
