WHY TAA
This is all we do, and we believe we do it better than anyone.
In addition to the 19 features we’ve listed in the links to the left, here is some more evidence to support our belief…
Exhibit A: Engineering Pros Love Our Design
Of the thousands of possible occupations our customers could have, nearly 1 in 10 of our clients hold engineering degrees, including Ph.D.s and professors of Mechanical Engineering. They recognize the strength and simplicity of our modular design…and they regularly “run the numbers” themselves.
Exhibit B: Customers Love Our Value
Since our debut in the fall of 2011 we have experienced dynamic growth nationwide, adding satisfied customers in 25 states and Canada in less than three years. Nearly a third of our customers are Do-It-Yourselfers who are happy to have finally located a high quality, user-friendly, modular and mobile safe room design.
Exhibit C: Excellence in Quality Control
We’re not a (fill in the blank)….and Safe Rooms company. This isn’t a side job for us. We’re not dealers of someone else’s product, we are the manufacturer. We control the quality because we control the process, the labor and the materials. We purchase only raw materials that meet our strict specification, and fabricate our safe rooms right here at our Tulsa, OK facility to strict tolerances. Every safe room bolts up perfectly, looks fantastic, and meets all construction and quality control guidelines set forth by FEMA, ICC-500 and the National Storm Shelter Association.
We’ve paid attention to every detail, considered every scenario, selected only the highest quality materials, demanded the highest quality workmanship, and employed smart engineering principles…not guess work…all to ensure your safety.
FEMA COMPLIANT
The terms “FEMA APPROVED” or “FEMA CERTIFIED” do not exist! If a manufacturer claims this they are misleading you. FEMA does not “APPROVE”, “CERTIFY”, or “RECOMMEND” safe room manufacturers or their designs, so beware those who make this claim!
Tornado Alley Armor is designed to meet or exceed FEMA P-320 2014, FEMA P-361 2015, & ICC-500 2014 standards for safe room design and construction. Check the “other guys”…ask them to provide documentation that their design meets or exceeds FEMA 320/361 design standards for safe room construction. Also, make sure that they didn’t go overboard with costly design overkill and excessive materials. Sound engineering design leads to the most cost effective products. Our design works perfectly without costly overkill! Our FEMA 320/361 & ICC-500 compliance is NSSA verified and we can prove it! You won’t have to wonder if your safe room will meet FEMA safe room rebate requirements.
NSSA MEMBER
Don’t accept excuses where your family’s safety is concerned! The NSSA is the gold standard of safe room design intergrity, ethics and compliance, and we’re among the elite few who have earned and maintain membership in this FEMA recognized self-policing association.
Look for the NSSA seal, your assurance of safe room excellence.
Our NSSA Producer Member status assures you, the consumer, that:
Our safe room design has been thoroughly checked for strength and code compliance by a certified Professional Engineer (FEMA 320/361 and ICC-500 Standards for Safe Room Design & Construction); THEN
All calculations, drawings & quality control systems have been peer reviewed by a second, NSSA-approved certified Professional Engineer familiar with safe room design codes and requirements
Design changes are scrutinized in the same manner to assure continued safety
All required debris missile impact testing has been perfomed and documented;
Quality control systems are in place for construction and installation;
Your installation will be performed properly;
Your safe room will qualify for state and federal safe room funding and rebate programs if available, and
We have taken an oath of ethics to provide only the highest quality of FEMA-compliant safe rooms
With our NSSA membership, you don’t have to wonder if you’re working with a legitimate or a fly-by-night operator, or if your safe room will qualify for FEMA funding. NSSA = BEST OF THE BEST
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR YOUR SAFETY:
The storm shelter industry is UNREGULATED. That means anyone with a welder, fiberglass resin or cement mixer can decide to build shelters today and start manufacturing them tomorrow with no design oversight, no regulations, and no concern for your safety. Membership in a professional industry association is not required, so beware.
Also, you may run across another storm shelter association out there claiming to be on par with the NSSA, a claim which is demonstrably FALSE! The missing element can only be found by comparing their guidelines to the NSSA’s.
A step found in the NSSA requirements is omitted from their membership requirements….the most critical, difficult and time consuming requirement designed to ensure your safety…. independent 3rd party FEMA compliance verification….. allowing their members to be able to more easily join that association and consequently participate in FEMA rebate programs.
LOWER REQUIREMENTS = LOWER STANDARDS FOR YOUR FAMILY
F-5 IMPACT VERIFIED
Tornado Alley Armor has been subjected to and passed the punishing debris impact tests administered at the Texas Tech University WISE Center for both the door and the safe room enclosure designs. As a matter of fact, we requested FIVE ADDITIONAL TEST IMPACTS from the 2×4 cannon above and beyond the four required for F5 test verification! You can watch the test video here.
BUT…DON’T THINK THAT IMPACT TESTED STORM SHELTERS ARE AUTOMATICALLY FEMA COMPLIANT! THEY DON’T PERFORM COMPLIANCE CHECKS AT TTU, ONLY IMPACT TESTING. See our next advantage…the BIG one most companies avoid!
Safe rooms and storm shelter manufacturers are NOT required by law to build to FEMA standards, or to test their doors or enclosures at the WISE Center in Lubbock, TX. Make sure your safe room and door has documented test results and the manufacturer provides those certified results with your sales paperwork. We do!
BEST VALUE
The goal of the Tornado Alley Armor safe room design is to provide a safe, simple and affordable severe weather solution for the average household or do-it-yourselfer. The simplicity of our design and fabrication methods allows Tornado Alley Armor to offer a premium safe room for a budget price.
We squeezed every unneeded penny out of our design, fabrication and overhead to keep our costs low and pass those savings on to you, without sacrificing quality. We use only the highest grade materials in our design, not low-end cheap general construction steel. Don’t spend your hard-earned money on wasteful overhead, oversized materials, heavy machinery, high transportation costs and antiquated fabrication methods.
Compare equally sized, WISE-certified units and you’ll see. Buy the smart choice… buy Tornado Alley Armor!
LOW SHIPPING COST
The Tornado Alley Armor safe room modular design provides the flexibility to palletize an entire safe room on a single compact pallet. In shipping lingo, a palletized safe room crated for shipment is rated as a Class 50 load, meaning it has the highest weight-to-volume ratio and therefore a lower shipping cost.
Factory-assembled storm shelters, whether fiberglass or steel, have a much lower weight-to-volume ratio and therefore significantly higher shipping costs. On-site assembly saves shipping costs, saving you money.

ENTRAPMENT PROOF
CLAUSTROPHOBIC MUCH? The Tornado Alley Armor safe room modular design makes every panel an alternate route out of the safe room.
WE ARE THE ONLY SAFE ROOM ON THE MARKET WITH A GUARANTEED ENTRAPMENT-PROOF DESIGN! With Tornado Alley Armor, every panel is a potential escape route. All that is needed are two simple end wrenches (which we include with every safe room!) permanently stored inside the unit to ensure there’s always a way out. With the two wrenches zip tied inside you’re guaranteed a quick way out…just pick a panel and start unbolting! If that panel is blocked, move to the next one, or the next one.
You can completely disassemble your unit from the inside, so how could you possibly be trapped? No waiting to be found or rescued. With the other guys, you might just be in there awhile.
Don’t get trapped for hours, days or worse in your safe room….buy Tornado Alley Armor!
EASY TO RELOCATE
Your safe room investment can travel when you do. With Tornado Alley Armor, a wrench is all that’s needed to disassemble your safe room and take it with you.
The individual panels are easy to handle, easy to move, and easy to reassemble at your new home. No need for forklifts, contract labor or heavy duty trailers to move our safe rooms. And traditional underground units…you can just kiss them goodbye when you leave and start shopping for a new one. We’re betting you’ll wish you’d have purchased a modular design from the get-go.

DIY OPTIONAL INSTALL
Our simple assembly and tool requirements make a Tornado Alley Armor installation well within the capabilities of most DIY’ers. If you can muster a little assistance from a friend or two to raise a panel set (for safety), Tornado Alley Armor is an easy weekend project that most do-it-yourselfers wouldn’t hesitate to tackle.
Our detailed instructions also provide alternate methods of assembly that allow a single person to handle the installation with ease. Additionally, we provide our DIY customers with professional 24/7 phone support, along with how-to videos, detailed instructions, and the tips and tricks the professional installers use to make the installation a breeze. (Pssst! A common lifting device can also be rented very cheaply making the job entirely a one-person affair).
Of course, we can always provide professional installation as well for those who’d rather not miss kickoff….
TRIPLE DUTY USE
Due to its easy access and secure design, Tornado Alley Armor works perfectly as a home invasion panic room, a gun safe and a personal property vault. Whether it is installed in the garage, closet or spare room, our safe room is only a few short steps away should an intruder break into your home.
The steel door can be secured in LESS THAN ONE SECOND from the inside providing a solid steel barrier between you and the criminal. Once safe inside cell phones can be used to call for help, but conventional hand gun and hunting rounds won’t penetrate the shell. And with the dual-action override mechanism you cannot be locked in from the outside! Tornado Alley Armor safe rooms may also be used to secure firearms like a gun safe, and to keep personal property locked away from theives.
Try that with an outdoor or underground safe room. Get the most for your money, buy Tornado Alley Armor!
SMALLEST FOOT PRINT
Yes, the comparison above is accurate…with Tornado Alley Armor’s modular design the difference really is that dramatic! Our safe rooms can be completely assembled using nothing more than a pair of end wrenches.
Anchoring requires one additional tool, a hammer drill (or better, a rotary hammer), to drill the anchor holes into the concrete slab. Just take a look at the array of equipment “the other guys” need to install virtually all of their above ground and under ground units.
Our simple assembly and tool requirements makes a Tornado Alley Armor installation well within the capabilities of most DIY’ers.
