I’m worried about being able to call for help if I get trapped inside a storm shelter after a tornado. Will my cell phone work if I can’t get out of an underground in the garage floor storm shelter or in an above ground safe room?
Great question! It doesn’t occur to lots of folks to ask about cell phones working in storm shelters. It’s good to know before making your purchase whether or not you’ll be able to call for help after a tornado. From our experience everyone we have ever talked to, and we have talked to hundreds of people, have told us that their cell phones do not work in the underground type cellars. This has been a concern for a lot of years because with the underground storm shelter, whether it is in the garage or the back yard, you only have one way in and one way out. If that hatch gets blocked by debris and you aren’t able to call for help you are stuck. That’s a scary prospect.We even tried to search on Google for “underground storm shelter cell phone reception” and the best we could find from actual manufacturers of underground storm shelters were evasive comments never actually stating that their underground storm shelters would get reception. We found answers like: “It depends on your carrier.” “To the best of our knowledge, there is no noticeable loss of signal when inside..” Really? Either it will work or it won’t. Don’t take our word for it. Do your homework. Ask questions and test it out for yourself.
