Not every company rates their sizes the same way. At Tornado Alley Armor Safe Rooms we always use FEMA guidelines in everything we do. FEMA suggests you should have 3 square feet per adult, so going by that guideline the Champion safe room is a 3 adult size. Something to always keep in mind is that the storm shelter industry is unregulated. Companies can make any kind of claims they feel like making about their brand and no one is going to make them stop if they are lying.
The way to know that a company is really doing everything FEMA suggests is to check if they are a member in the National Storm Shelter Association. They don’t let just anyone join. Your company has to pass one review of the design checking for FEMA compliance, and then it has to pass an independent peer review. If the design passes that review as well, then you are allowed to join. Tornado Alley Armor is proud to be a Producer Member in the National Storm Shelter Association. So, back to the Champion safe room and how many people can fit. When you do the math it actually comes out to being rated for 3.8 adults. 🙂 We round down, but you can see how this smaller size is a perfect starter size for a family with small children. Bonus- when the kids cause you to outgrow it give us a call. You can add on an additional section and enlarge it!
