The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma- Storm Shelter Grants & Safety Classes

May 2014- The American Red Cross is awarding $6.5 million in grants to help homeowners affected by the 2013 tornadoes install storm shelters. The Seminole Nation was awarded $230,000, which will fund 92 shelters at a cost of $2,500 per home. The shelters can be installed inside a garage, underground outside the home, or as safe rooms for disabled people who cannot gain access to an underground shelter. Priority will be given to tribal members directly impacted by the storms, but any tribal member who lives in Canadian, Cleveland, Le Flore, Lincoln, McClain, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Okmulgee or Pottawatomie counties could be declared eligible to receive grant funding. Contact Tornado Alley Armor for more details.

The Health & Safety component of the Resident Services Department of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma recognizes individual knowledge and understanding as a primary factory for maintaining healthy and secure living. By showing Tribal members the facts and risk factors involved with common threats, the program attempts preventative intervention to keep people away not just from danger, but situations where trouble can arise.

Storm Safety classes demonstrate step by step methods for protecting oneself and others during a storm. Oklahoma storms wreak havoc every year and threaten thousands of unprepared families. In these classes, participants learn how to properly prepare and react to snow storms and tornadoes.
