We recently had a customer ask us: “Is my water safe to drink after a tornado?” The answer is below: A tornado itself won’t cause your drinking water to be unsafe, but if you have experienced damage that may have affected your water system, be cautious. If the water system fails, NEVER drink tap water unless you are certain it is not contaminated. To be safe, water should always be purified before drinking.
Three simple steps to purify water are: Bring water to a rolling boil for at least five minutes (ten is best). Treat with purification tablets, iodine (12 drops per gallon) or bleach (1/2 tablespoons per gallon). Use a water pump or gravity-fed purifier to strain bacteria from the water.
