Dr. Ernst Kiesling, Executive Director of the National Storm Shelter Association and professor of Engineering at the Wind Science and Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech University, addressing an emergency preparedness conference in Alabama.

Dr. Kiesling admonishes the conference attendees to beware of misleading claims used by the majority of non-NSSA storm shelter and safe room manufactures, implying they have NSSA, Texas Tech or FEMA endorsements, or meet requirements which are not true or verified.

The primary function of the NSSA is to provide a process by which reputable manufacturers can be independently verified to be in compliance with all NSSA, FEMA320 and ICC-500 design standards and recommendations for safe rooms and storm shelters. Consumers who purchase a safe room with the NSSA seal can rest assured that they have purchased a safe, quality severe weather product.
